Cat Laughs Comedy Festival

I’m honoured and delighted to have been appointed the new Director of the Cat Laughs Comedy Festival, which is where I first got my teeth into the business of show in 1996. It’s a great festival with an enviable reputation and a sometimes under-appreciated influence on the development of comedy in Ireland. I’m looking forward to working with my friends and colleagues there to drive it on to new heights and copperfasten its legacy as one of Ireland’s most important cultural institutions.

Constitutional Reform

Interesting paper presented by Dr. Carol Coulter to the recent Burren Law School on the dynamics of constitutional change. She mentions in her piece and opinion piece I wrote for The Irish Times on establishing a Second Republic and a new Constitution back in February 2010.

No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as a manor of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man’s death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

The Awakening: Leviathan in Donegal

Leviathan is back - for now - as part of a lovely event called The Awakening organised by the Earagail Arts Festival in the wonderful Rathmullan House Hotel (MindField regulars will know their fantastically popular food truck) over the weekend of the 3rd to the 5th of February - a sort of winter school, if you will. The show is on at 12pm on Saturday February 4th hosted by David McWilliams with historian Diarmaid Ferriter; Amnesty CEO, Colm O’Gorman, writer and health campaigner, Orla Tinsley and local star of The Apprentice, Joanne Sweeney-Burke; as well as satire and musical comedy from the great Paddy Cullivan, who also hosts a Sunday Brunch Show the following day. David will also do an in-depth one-on-one interview with one of Sinn Féin’s rising stars, local TD Pearse Doherty. There’s also the Snow Ball on Saturday night with great entertainment from In Their Thousands, Little John Nee, Balkan Alien Sound and Derry’s own Foyle Follies.

Tickets to individual events are available separately, with prices starting at a bargain basement €10.  Rathmullan House Hotel are offering a splendid all-in Awakening Weekend Package for the occasion, with two nights B&B and tickets to all events at €185 per person. In-house spa treatments, leisure club and a range of outdoor activities are available nearby, set amidst the stunning landscape of the Fanad Peninsula.

Come shake off those mental cobwebs - feed your mind, body and soul.
